Protein And Weight Loss
You’ve heard a lot about protein and its benefits. You have also seen gym trainers and goers rave about consuming enough protein. What does it do actually? Does it really aid weight loss and build muscle mass? The answer is yes, it does. Proteins are an integral part of our metabolism and hormonal system.
1. Protein affects the levels of several weight regulating hormones
Body weight is regulated by a part of the brain called hypothalamus.
It actively determines how much you need to eat and it controls the feeling of
hunger or fullness. A higher protein diet reduces the hunger hormone and boosts
satiety hormone. Hence, a protein bar is always recommended when you
are extremely hungry after meals.
2. Digesting proteins is a calorie-burning activity
Every morsel of food you eat needs energy to digest. Studies have
shown that protein requires much more energy than other macro nutrients for
metabolism and digestion. About 30% of calories from protein are used for
metabolising it.
3. Protein curbs cravings.
Cravings are everyone's weak spot. The food items one craves is often
sugar loaded and/or carb loaded. It affects your entire diet. Various studies
have shown that protein cuts down on your cravings especially the late night
ones. Late night snacking is one of the enemies in your weight loss journey.
4. Protein makes you burn more calories.
We already know that digesting proteins burns more calories. However,
it is also proven that proteins increase your body’s ability to burn calories
over all too. You burn more calories all throughout the day, even while
sleeping.
5. Protein makes you consume less calories.
